In 1987 EJ was dared
to "put out the hat" and play in public busking for
money by his grandmother Juanita. He only knew five tunes at
that time but it was enough to earn him $13 and a pinch on the
behind by a passing college girl. He decided that night what
he wanted to be when he grew up.
After getting a strong start in the traditional
Scottish style of bagpiping at the St. Thomas Episcopal School
under the instruction of Michael Cusack, EJ joined the Hamilton
Pipe Band led by Donald MacPhee. He took lessons constantly,
was a committed member of the band, and competed at every opportunity.
In 1991 EJ co-founded the group Clandestine
with Lars Sloan, Randy Wothke, and J.W. McCormick to play the
Texas Renaissance Festival. By 1993 he had been performing for
years with Hamilton Pipe Band, had been to Scotland with some
success winning the "Best Overseas" prize in the Grade
II World's and was about to go to Carnegie Mellon University
to study under James MacIntosh.
In 1994 EJ dropped out of college and came
back to Texas with guitarist Jen Hamel with whom he reconstituted
Clandestine and went back to the Texas Renaissance Festival
as a founding member of the Rogues.
By 1996 Clandestine, with EJ, Jen Hamel,
Gregory McQueen and Emily Dugas, was a full time touring music
group and in 1998 they went on the road all over the U.S. with
jaunts into Canada and occasional trips to play in France.
