Who knew today was International Bagpipe Day?

We tracked the pipes today on some things and I started off by trying out almost every microphone in the room in front of the pipes. There was a moment when we thought one of them had gotten blown in the process but it turned out to be okay.  Then we started pairing mics together and trying out the different combinations.

In the end we used a couple of microphones in front of me, one vintage mic from the 60’s behind me for the drones, and then another one in the stairwell with the door open so it was catching the pipes from down the hall. So that’s 4 microphones total spaced between 2 and 20 feet away. I heard the stairwell mic idea was taken from a story of recording John Bonham, the drummer for Led Zeppelin.
